Captain America: Civil War – A Review of a Mediocre Movie

I don’t attempt to spoil anything in this review of Civil War but I sure don’t go out of my way not to so I would consider this to have spoilers.

The latest Marvel movie has hit the screens in the form of Civil War, and after the extremely good The Winter Solider I was really looking forward to this latest offering.  There is really nothing wrong with this movie. It is in all respects a very watchable movie. However, that is kinda where it ends for me. Nothing really jumps out at me.

The action scenes are a lot of fun although a few of them do feel a bit long. It seems to me that the best parts of the movie are because what is going on in the scene not how it actually done. It’s awesome to see Ant-Man fight with the cast, or to see Captain America fight Iron Man, but that is where it ends.  The fight scenes also really suffer from some bad effects. The one I remember the most was a scene with Vision at the airport that looked very bad… were talking as bad as some of the Supergirl TV show effects. After watching this movie I got home and watched Age of Ultron which just looks better than this film.

The overall plot is fine but in a lot of respects it comes across as a simple way to get the characters from one fight scene to the next. The big reveal  at the end comes across as maybe the least shocking twist in the history of the genre and it would have only been s surprise if it had turned out not to happen.

Two of the really bright spots in this movie are the two new characters that it introduces to this continuity.  Spider Man is finally handled as a high school kid and is played by one and Tom Holland really seems to be a great fit for the role. The casting department at Marvel rarely gets a casting wrong and both the newcomers in this film are no exception. Black Panther is also done well in this movie and Chadwick Boseman fits into those shoes nicely.  On a side note it was great not to have a full two hours dedicated to the origin story… everyone who makes superhero movies please take note.

Overall Civil War is very watchable but it no way is it magical. I feel no desire to go see it again before it comes out on Blu-Ray. I had a lot of expectations for this film and it just did not seem to live up to them.
